Prompt Shoot -Hoesay

Purple, Snapple Juice with the background all blurred and the only clear subject to it. Rule of Thirds.

Metal, I personally see a small man with a beard picking up either another person or some text trying to show superiority. Simplicity.

Electric, I couldn't find the image on my folder so I'm guessing it wasn't downloaded properly. No excuses though, I can explain what I was trying to capture. I was walking towards one of the portables and I noticed these tubes connecting to the air conditioner. I stood right in front and walked a couple steps to the right and filled the frame with the light yellow wall and the main focus being the air conditioner and the pipes running left and right.

Self Portrait and Portrait Part I -Hoesay

TIPS:

Alter Your Perspective

Most portraits are taken with the camera at (or around) the eye level of the subject. While this is good common sense – completely changing the angle that you shoot from can give your portrait a real WOW factor.
10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits

Take Unfocused Shots

As photographers we have ‘sharp focus’ drummed into us as an ultimate objective to achieve in our work – but sometimes lack of focus can create shots with real emotion, mood and interest.
There are two main strategies for taking unfocused images that work:
1. Focus upon one element of the image and leave your main subject blurred. To do this use a large aperture which will create a narrow depth of field and focus upon something in front of or behind your subject.
portrait-unfocused.jpg

Environmental Portrait

This footballer is in his environment, which is the soccer field, and the viewer can see nothing but the main subject. Him
This dancer in her studio practicing some stretches to improve her flexibility and her overall performance.
Self Portrait

A girl pretending to end it and instead of a bullet coming out the other end, confetti comes out;
A beautiful girl filling the frame with just her being the main subject.
Casual Portrait

To emphasize herself the rest of the background is out of focus and we can only see her, the main point, and in high definition.
Same concept as the girl above, everything else behind her is slightly out of focus leaving her to be the emphasis point.

Questions

I plan on taking pictures of myself and my doggy Lulu. I hope to get a picture of her in Rule of Thirds if she's willing to cooperate with me and not mess around trying to play especially since I plan on taking the picture early in the morning. Another thing I like to do is read books on business, so I plan on getting a few pictures of myself reading.

Love and Loss -Hoesay

I felt sadness. It showed the deterioration of a human and her partner as well, watching his loved one fight something that can't be touched. Cancer can only be tamed and in some lucky cases it can be beaten.

Photos are a moment in time. It captures us in a period of time that does not always define us. She was never struggling with cancer, nor was she always happy, or sad, or in despair. Her husband caught her in a moment in time that she wasn't stuck in.

As much as I want to say yes I couldn't. It'd be very difficult for me watching a loved one slowly die and be in agony.

"In the despair that you've documented, you've created one of the most beautiful arts I've ever seen."

American Soldier -Hoesay

Set 1: Image #1-3
Set 2: Image #4-8
Set 3: Image #9-27

The first set of images were the most powerful because it showed his life before the major responsibility he carried on his shoulders. Which is to look after an entire country against a group of terrorists that have no remorse.

As a story they have perfect sequence, it shows his previous life and how going into the army changed him into a new responsible man who would in the future return to his family whom he loves and missed so much.

The photos in which Ian was the subject they were usually in past tense. Captions under the photos add to the story and give a better detailed story.

His life before the Army consisted of drugs, parties, and overall bad behavior that no young adult should be in, at least not every day. He joins the Army and gets drafted, once in, he begins the basic training. Through rough sergeants and colleagues he makes it through a better person than ever before.

Funny Captions -Hoesay

Betty and Jackson are burning rubber, what about you? Everyone else headed to their destination by foot to the Olympic Games. Try racing them next time you see them.
Susan and her husband Ronald deciding to give youngsters some life advice about how bad they had it back in the day. We shouldn't take things like iPhones and Androids for granted and should enjoy the moment we have it.
With plenty of years alive, lighting one up and losing 15 minutes from Anne's life doesn't seem to bother her too much. Probably enjoyed 4/20 and wouldn't mind being born that day.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3 -Hoesay

Mural Part:

I think using our phones will be fun to do since we don't have all the fancy features that professional cameras have. It'd push us to get better lighting and angles, however, it'd have to be simple stuff. We wouldn't be able to get birds in high definition flying from one tree to another. Putting the murals around the part where the hallways divide, the little void between one side of the hallway and the other would be creative. They'd look like curtains almost.

Great Black and White Photographers:

1. What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? Post the images with your writing.

This photo caught my image because in my opinion it's ahead of its time. This was taken during the early 40's. Much of photography was still undiscovered and this kind of style wasn't really present with the works of other photographers during his era.

Along with this one is how he was able to blur everything else in the background. The title claims that the car was parked, however, creating the blur in the background makes it seem as though the car is actually moving. Something that really caught my attention.

2. Look at those 2 photos you posted last tie in the assignment Great Black and White Photographers Part 2. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos.
- In both photos there was a lot of noise, along with movement. I have to approach both shoots properly and get the perfect angle or else it won't be perfect. If these come out perfect I'm going to change the world of photography, I know I will.

3. I think a powerpoint would really be helpful with showing people I'm a decent photographer. Especially if I work alone I know I can come up with something really creative. It'd be on my own theme and I could manipulate it however I want to.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique -Hoesay

What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you? Trying to think outside of the box and provide pictures that although didn't have academics clearly. Thinking abstractly will reveal the message behind it.

What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I figured most people would do the mainstream pictures of a clear academic subject without embedding the subject within the picture. A picture is worth a thousand words.
If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography? Ask my teachers ahead of time if I could go into their class and provide mainstream photos.

What things would you do the same? Continue to think outside the box.

When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve? Simplicity

Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture? Rule of thirds

What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is? I think I understand all the rules properly and know how to execute them.

Academic Post Shoot Reflection and Peer Reflection -Hoesay

I followed the rule of framing, by literally taking a picture of a drawing that was already framed. The subject is also clear as to what I wanted the main focus to be.

Rule of simplicity. My subject was clear, although it doesn't express academic clearly, I tried making it to where although it wasn't a direct picture of students working on something each of the signs had something to do with academics. Class room locations, portables, Fine Arts, etc.

Simplicity, again my subject is clear and it shows academic activities after school. If I could re-take this picture I'd rather do it following the principle of the Rule of Thirds.

Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO -Hoesay

Aperture

Aperture Setting F2.8
Aperture Setting F 16
1. Our eyes themselves work similar to a camera. Pupils will get bigger which allows more light in and vice versa they shrink.
2. The smaller the aperture, the larger the f-number. The larger the aperture the smaller the f-number.
3. The size of the aperture affects the background more importantly. It can make the foreground in focus and completely blur the background and not allow anything in the back to distract the viewer from the foreground. Vice versa, it can still focus clearly on the foreground but it'd leave some details in the background still visible and can distract the viewer from the foreground.

Shutter Speed

1. A booth in the middle of the yard near the Tree
Low
2. A food booth outside under one of the big red awnings
Moderate
3. The Starts performance inside the gym
High
4. Students dancing near the center of the courtyard
High
5. People streaming in from the front doors
Moderate
6. The basketball booth where students are shooting basketballs at a hoop
High

High Shutter Speed
Slow Shutter Speed that could've been taken with a high shutter speed

ISO

1. What are the advantages of shooting at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
Even though the lighting isn't too great the camera can still work with the dim lighting and although the picture might appear grainy it'll still produce an image.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
Always use it in order to have the highest definition and retain the most detail.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
Only increase it when there's little light in order to freeze motion.

Academic Shoot Preview -Hoesay

The Story

An experiment is being conducted by students about water and how it reacts with certain chemicals. The two girls are surprised with their finished product as it just bursts into the air and I'm guessing gives them the result they were investigating for. Water molecules are all over the place, some have landed on the table all ready and some are still airborne.

Action and Emotion

Once again another experiment is being conducted by students. The product being produced is similar to that of dry ice and is spreading across the entire table getting ready to pour over down to the floor. All of the students are amazed by what's happening right in front of them as the fog itself goes over their hands without hurting them in the slightest.

Filling the Frame

A picture of feeding the homeless the entire frame is full of students giving homeless people food and other materials. The angle in which it was taken shows the line of students one after another just giving back to the community and showing nothing but love; from one human to human. Filling the frame not only with pixels, but with a message, give back.

Favorite Photo

My favorite photo is of two girls that are on their school campus picking up trash. Being an environment lover I really like how they have a day where students go out and not only make their campus cleaner but help the earth as well. By the looks of the background most of the area where both of them are at don't seem to be that dirty anymore. Implying that maybe they were working for quite sometime when the photo was taken and it was getting close to being done. Another thing, the angle in which the photo was taken was really low to the ground, maybe to add some effect, making it seem as though the photo was taken by the ground itself.

Questions:
1) I chose this photo because it had good organization and there wasn't anything distracting from the subject at hand. It was simple and created a story.
2) The rule of this photo was simplicity, it had an obvious subject and nothing complex about it.
3) Probably in an art room or a science room
4) I want to try and think outside the box and show academics without having to go into a classroom, it'd be challenging and allow for some creativity to take over in my head.
5) Look for angles to make photos more interesting.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics -Hoesay

Photo manipulation in my opinion is horrible, it creates a false image that can ruin the way a person is perceived. Models for example are photoshopped to appear as perfect beings, a falsehood of perfection that doesn't exist and has people feel bad about themselves for not looking like the "perfect beings" in the pictures.

Re-creating a meeting where photographers weren't present is unethical, people who don't really understand the context will think that two enemies have now formed an alliance.

The original photo didn't include the puppy. With or without the pup wouldn't have made me view the image differently, it's not that big a deal.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 2 -Hoesay

This photo was shot by Walker Evans whom is remembered for his photographs during The Great Depression and the effects it had. All of his art work is black and white which during that time period fit the moment.

Walker Evans was born on November 3rd, 1903 in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a store clerk from 1927-1929 on Wall Street, meanwhile, along with being a store clerk he also took up photography in 1928. Two of his inspirations were Eugène Atget and August Sander. Along with photography Evans also enjoyed reading and writing. In 1945 he booked a job to write for Time Magazine, later on he joined Fortune Magazine as an editor in 1965, along with being a professor at Yale University School of Art that same year. Evans passed away in his own home in New Haven, Connecticut 1975. At the turn of the millennium he was inaugurated into the Walk of Fame.

Prompt Shoot -Hoesay

I think this photo follows the rule of simplicity, it's straight forward and the background is nice.
Another simplicity, my subject is clear and the background fits the time period in which this was taken school

My least favorite pictures, lines are major in this photo, on the ceiling, the hallway, the white line leading to the actual subject.
One of my favorite photos on here, I believe this is rule of thirds, my subject is clear and the background is completely blurred allowing just the subject to take the spotlight.

Framing, repetition amongst the pillars themselves are creating this void that looks like it gets deeper and deeper.

Bad merger, the pipe in the background looks like it's coming out of the can of chips and the lighting is horrible.

Post Shoot Reflection -Hoesay

Some challenges I encountered during the shoot was the time constraint and being creative enough to get the proper angle and lighting to fit the picture. For the most part I'm really into the rule of thirds so trying to get different composition rules was difficult. I really focused on getting the focus to be as perfect as possible more than anything else. Figuring out the position I needed to be in was a difficult as well to get the proper angle.

If I could do this assignment again I'd change the pictures for Bowie and Happy, the angles I chose for both the pictures were horrible in my opinion and could definitely use some work. My favorite picture was Metal, I wouldn't change a thing about that picture.

http://ramisphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2015/09/1st-composition-shoot.html#comment-form

I really really like Bowie and Square, the subject is clear, in the Bowie picture it has a little off centered look to it which is amazing. In Square although it could've been a better idea to be directly under the square it's still a great picture, the diagonal lines lead the viewer to the square in the middle.
However, for happy, although it is a good picture the trash can kind of interferes with the shot and maybe a little more work with the angle could've been done. A good photo, but it definitely had more potential.

9/11 Composition Photos -Hoesay

It's a straight forward picture, the towers were hit; simplicity

The photographers was above ground level and was showing the entire scenario before the plane hit; framing

The composition of this photo are built on the lines of the building

Most of the scene is proportional; balance

In comparison to the wreckage the man looks small and off centered; rule of thirds

Understandable that in the moment of the event angle was the last thing going through the photographers mind, moving a little over to the right would've made this better. Since the man on the left wouldn't have been cut off; merging

The Camera -Hoesay

The Camera

1. The Greek and Chinese discovered an effect which when translated to English, means dark room, in a completely dark room there was a small hole in a wall. Light was focused and the picture appeared on the wall opposite where the small hole was made.
2. Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens perfected and better understood optics and the process of making high quality lenses.
3. A glass lens, film, & a dark box
4. The invention of digital film
5. They still use glass lens, film, and a dark box

Camera Modes
6. Auto Mode controls flash and focus unlike Program mode where you can control flash and some other settings.
7. Portrait mode is used to blur out the background and focus on the person or object the camera is pointing at.
8. Sport Mode freezes all motion and the camera uses the highest shutter speed possible

The Half Press
9. It focuses on the shot and it still allows you to check the surroundings, which provides you with an opportunity to maybe switch positions or change the angle and get a better shot.

Controlling Flash
10. Disabled flash
11. The flash is automatic

Introduction to Exposure
12. Too much light and the photo is washed out
13. Not enough light and the photo is too dark

The Universal Stop
14. A term used to describe the change of light.
15. 1
16. 2

Shutters and Aperture
17. The longer the shutter the more light.
18. The shorter the shutter the less light there is.
19. Brightness is reduced.
20. "Aperture Opening" aka F-Stop

Great Black and White Photos -Hoesay

Berenice Abbott
El at Columbus Avenue and Broadway 1935-1939
I like this photo due to the angle that it's at. It's just of a small town with people walking around heading to their destination and as you can see there's a random horse there trotting with the people unbothered.

Walker Evans
Parked Car, Small Town, Main Street 1932
The picture seems to have some story or background to it, the woman clearly looks in distress as her husband
Harry Callahan
Detroit 1943
Repetition effect is really cool and it looks like there's just a swarm of the same cars. The environment fits and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

1st Day Photos -Hoesay

I like the first two photos, the first one has a nice flower and it has the background blurred, which is one of my favorite things to do when taking photos, however, the angle could’ve been much much better. The second photo has some humor behind it, not only is it a picture of just a trashcan with the school as its background, the joke is that’s what I thought of my first day. It was trash.
